Contractor Protechnique has won an $80 million Engineering Procurement Construction contract for the 300,000m3/day Basra water pumping station, P2R, in Iraq.

The contract is part of a project to enhance the southern Iraqi city’s potable water supply and is due to be completed in December 2018. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is providing funding.

The contract was won against opposition that included Toyota and Al Ghanem Construction, Arab Contractors and Terna.

Work will entail installing the main pumping and water circulation stations to transfer water from a desalination project that was built by a Hitachi/OTV joint venture.

As well as the pumping station, the contract includes construction of a transmission reservoir, chlorine building, blending chambers, electrical substation, a generator building, pipework, and valve and flow meter chambers as well as associated infrastructure.
