Issue:

Engineering consultancy Black & Veatch has added to the asset management capabilities it offers utilities by becoming an authorised provider of the lean manufacturing and reliability-centred maintenance programme of business process improvement consultancy EMS Cognito.

EMS Cognito offers its IMPACT Masterclass Lean RCM (reliability centred maintenance) Programme. This combines lean manufacturing and RCM tools with the aim of delivering improvements in the efficiency of asset-intensive processes. Under an Authorised Provider Agreement, asset management professionals within Black & Veatch will be trained by EMS Cognito to deliver the programme to water and energy clients.

In a statement released by Black & Veatch, Scott Aitken, Managing Director, Black & Veatch Europe, commented: ‘What sets Black & Veatch apart is the ability to support every point in the lifecycle of utilities’ assets. Becoming an authorised provider of [the programme] extends our reach further into the asset management sphere.

According to Black & Veatch, lean RCM focuses on what a process is intended to do, identifying factors that stop the process from delivering, and then implementing steps to mitigate those factors, creating a condition-based regime for asset maintenance.

Also in the statement, Richard Kelly, Managing Director of EMS Cognito, comments: ‘This agreement with Black & Veatch is an opportunity to introduce our accredited process improvement to additional water and energy companies.’
