US Geological Survey assesses water sampling role of portable centrifuges

  • Technology

Issue:

The US Geological Survey has issued a report looking at the benefits of a portable continuous flow centrifuge that it has invented, which is intended to save time and money on contaminant analysis for particles suspended in water samples.

Contaminant analysis usually requires the collection of large volume samples and separation of the water from the suspended sediment in the laboratory, which is time consuming and costly.

The USGS’ new field technique uses the portable centrifuge to create a small solid sample that can be easily shipped to a laboratory for analysis.
